Indoor Movie Lights

ml

These Movie Top Lights or Movie Bar Lights for indoor lighting were popular once upon a time. They could be in 2-, 4-bulb or more configurations.

The bulbs are

Glass Shape ANSI W Base Color Temperature (°K)
R-30 EBR 375 E-26 (US) or E-27 (European) 3400
R-30 BEP 300 E-26 (US) or E-27 (European) 3400

These bulbs are still manufactured. You may also find similar bulbs in 250, 275, 500W, and daylight (white) balanced for today’s film stocks. The shape, being Reflector and flood-type aren’t the top priority, but the Base and Voltage should be exact!

GENERAL ELECTRIC MEDIUM BEAM REFLECTOR PHOTOFLOODS
G-E Medium Beam Reflector Photofloods give twice as much light in the picture area as regular reflector photoflood lamps.
• Built-in reflector directs light evenly, precisely.
• Black coating on bulb keeps stray light from camera lens.
• Rated life of 4 hours—enough time to shoot over one-half mile of 16 mm film,
• Two or more on a movie light bar are especially effective- cover the scene with brilliant, even illumination.
• Rated at 3400°K. — give excellent results with Type A color film without use of filter.
Excellent for black and white photography—4 lamps can be used on a normal 15 ampere house circuit.

They provide flat and uniform lighting due to the lamp configuration and design.

Closer subjects may have shadows more than one when they have more than one lamp.

Quartz Film Lighting Units (Open-face)

Quartz Film Lighting Units (with cooling fans)

videolight

These units have the cooling fans which are extremely efficient. The fan enables continuous operation without any interruption, as well as a tempered glass (similar to the Fresnel lens) in front of the lamp. Some units have the spot – flood ability for changing the effective light angles.

A switch enables to operate 500W in some units as well. They can be in single or double head configurations.

Osram 64575 EGY

They provide harsh lighting (flash like) due to the lamp configuration and face design unless any diffusing material in front of them is used, as well as very poor quality lighting style.

They cause high temperatures especially at closer distances so any too close material like filters used will be burned. Should be used with caution!

Closer subjects will have hard shadows and any people close by it suffer from heat and high brightness mostly resulting in closing their eyes or manually creating shadow on their faces.

All the mentioned units have 1/4″ threaded holes allowing them to use on tripods and lighting stands away from the cameras.
